NumFOCUS is pleased to congratulate Julia co-creators Jeff Bezanson, Stefan Karpinski and Viral Shah on winning the 2019 James H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software.

Julia’s co-creators set out to solve the two language problem by creating a new language that is as easy as Py(thon) and as fast as C. They began the Julia project in 2009 and announced it in 2012.

Julia is an early NumFOCUS sponsored project, joining NumFOCUS in 2014. The Julia community and NumFOCUS have jointly participated in a number of projects including Google Summer of Code, Project Jupyter (the Ju in Jupyter stands for Julia), diversity initiatives, conferences (JuliaCon and PyData), workshops and training sessions. In 2017, Julia joined the rarefied ranks of computing languages that have achieved peak performance exceeding one petaflop per second – the so-called ‘Petaflop Club’ — through a Julia application called Celeste

The James H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software is awarded every four years to recognize innovative software in scientific computing. This year’s prize will be presented at the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Conference on Computational Science and Engineering
(CSE19) in Spokane, WA, February 25-March 1, 2019.
