NumFOCUS Membership Program

Powering Open Source Science & Innovation

Scientific open-source software (OSS) powers every sector of modern research and industry. From decoding the human genome to modeling climate change, designing life-saving drugs, and advancing AI, these tools and communities call NumFOCUS home. Our projects fuel breakthroughs in science and technology, equipping universities, research labs, government agencies, and industry leaders with the tools to address today’s most complex challenges.

Supporting NumFOCUS ensures the foundational tools our members depend on remain accessible, secure, and adaptable for the future.

Reliable Funding & Engagement

We are in the process of transitioning corporate sponsorships to our new Institutional Membership Program. NumFOCUS members will have increased opportunities for engagement with the NumFOCUS community, while supporting the critical work of our projects.

The NumFOCUS Membership Program was created with two goals in mind:

Secure essential support for projects and the continuation of services through a reliable funding model.

Offer researchers, academic institutions, research labs, and industry users opportunities to engage with projects and gain actionable insight into the scientific OS ecosystem.

We Invite your institution to join our work to support the foundational tools of tomorrow’s technology.

Over the past three years, NumFOCUS has:

  • Dispersed $13 million in project allocations for development, maintenance, and community management.
  • Managed $10.25 million in project grants.
  • Awarded $800,000 in Small Development Grants to accelerate project growth.
  • Provided $109,000 in project legal support.
  • Strengthened the user-to-contributor pipeline by organizing educational events that reached 20,000 community members.

Let’s triple this impact by investing in the future of open source scientific computing.

About Bloomberg

Bloomberg connects influential decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas. Our strength – quickly and accurately delivering data, news and analytics through innovative technology – is at the core of everything we do. Key participants in the financial markets depend on Bloomberg’s core product, the Terminal, to trade, manage risk, consume information, and navigate time-critical decisions. This means we must leverage the best technologies available for all of our projects. As a longtime proponent of open source technologies, our developers are also significant contributors to many projects including Apache Solr/Lucene, Apache Hadoop and OpenStack, and we publish many of our own projects on GitHub. We are always looking for new ways to work with, analyze, and display our data and often choose Jupyter to rapidly develop prototypes and share results with others across our data science, machine learning and quantitative research teams. Bringing Jupyter to Bloomberg also means we are actively contributing to the community.
