Giving Tuesday 2019 marked the start of NumFOCUS’s year-end fundraising campaign, and this year’s effort began with a major donation from the organization’s Board President, Andy Terrel. “Today I’m pledging a gift of $2,500 to help kick off the NumFOCUS end-of-year fundraising campaign,” Terrel wrote yesterday in an e-mail to the NumFOCUS community. “I believe in the work NumFOCUS does each day to promote open practices in research, data, and scientific computing. Please join me and thousands of other NumFOCUS donors in supporting the open-source tools we depend on.”
This year’s campaign highlights NumFOCUS’s Small Development Grants program. NumFOCUS provides small grants to Sponsored and Affiliated projects on a triannual basis to cover the cost of crucial infrastructure upgrades and to help projects grow their contributor communities. Small Development Grants are unique among NumFOCUS programs in that they rely in large part on gifts from individual donors.
In 2018, NumFOCUS provided $62,300 to 16 of its Sponsored and Affiliated projects. With the help of individual donors, the organization hopes to more than double this amount in 2020. Please click here to contribute to NumFOCUS’s Small Development Grants program through the year-end campaign.

Dear Friends,
Giving Tuesday is here! This first Tuesday in December has become an important time for non-profit organizations to seek support from the communities they serve. If you’re like me, you’re probably considering how to make the smartest investment during this time of year-end giving.
As President of the Board for NumFOCUS, I’m sending a personal appeal this year asking you to join me in giving back to this fantastic organization. Today I’m pledging a gift of $2,500 to help kick off the NumFOCUS end-of-year fundraising campaign. NumFOCUS is using this opportunity to highlight our Small Development Grants program, which helps NumFOCUS Sponsored and Affiliated Projects improve usability of their tools, grow their communities, and speed up the time to major releases. Below are just a few examples of the work that NumFOCUS enabled through our rounds of funding in 2019:
These types of upgrades are crucial to the sustainability of our Sponsored and Affiliated projects, but NumFOCUS can’t help our projects meet these needs without the generosity of people like you. We need your help.
Will you join me by donating to NumFOCUS today? If you haven’t already, I encourage you to sign up as a Sustaining Donor with a recurring monthly gift. That way, NumFOCUS can count on your support throughout the year.
I believe in the work NumFOCUS does each day to promote open practices in research, data, and scientific computing. Please join me and thousands of other NumFOCUS donors in supporting the open-source tools we depend on.
(P.S. – Many companies match the charitable donations of their employees. Check your company’s donation match policy to see if you can amplify your generosity!)
Sincerely,
Andy Terrel
President, NumFOCUS Board of Directors
