NumFOCUS is pleased to announce that Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry are moving out of our Fiscal Sponsorship Program and transitioning to a new, merged organization, The Carpentries, that will become a member of the NumFOCUS Community Alliance.
Members of the NumFOCUS Community Alliance are nonprofit organizations or community groups whose mission intersects with our own and reflects support for open source scientific computing. NumFOCUS cross-promotes activities and events held by members of our Community Alliance in a reciprocal, supportive relationship. Community Alliance members share our commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion in the data community.
Software Carpentry joined NumFOCUS as a fiscally sponsored project in 2014, and Data Carpentry joined NumFOCUS as a fiscally sponsored project in 2015. Over the ensuing years the two projects worked closely together and in early 2017 began discussions about a potential merger. The decision to go ahead with a merger was approved last summer, and this January marks the milestone of a fully merged organization, The Carpentries, with a newly-elected Executive Council.
As part of the formal merger, Software and Data Carpentry will be moving from fiscal sponsorship under NumFOCUS to The Carpentries with Community Initiatives, whose fiscal sponsorship administration services are better aligned with the emerging needs of The Carpentries.
NumFOCUS congratulates The Carpentries on their merger and celebrates the growth of the two projects. We look forward to continuing to work closely with The Carpentries as a new member of the NumFOCUS Community Alliance, together promoting the growth of the open source scientific computing community.
